Measure Your Ring Size — The Right Way

How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home — The Right Way

Ordering a ring online without knowing your size is a gamble most of us have lost at least once. The ring arrives, and it's either too tight to slide past the knuckle or loose enough to spin freely. The good news? You don't need a trip to a jeweller to get this right. With just a strip of paper or a measuring tape, you can find your exact size in under five minutes — and order with confidence every time.

Why ring size matters more than you think

A ring that fits well should slide over your knuckle with a little resistance and sit snugly on your finger without cutting into the skin. Too tight, and you'll struggle to get it off at the end of the day. Too loose, and you risk it slipping off without noticing.

Demi-fine jewellery — crafted with real gemstones and precious metal vermeil/plating — is designed to be worn daily and treasured long-term. Getting the size right from the start means you won't need to worry about resizing, which can affect delicate settings and plating.

Method 1: Using a strip of paper

This is the most reliable DIY method and the one we recommend for first-time buyers. All you need is a thin strip of paper, a pen, and a ruler.

1. Cut a thin strip of paper — roughly 1 cm wide and 10 cm long. A receipt or notebook paper works perfectly.

2. Wrap it snugly around the finger you plan to wear the ring on. It should be tight enough to stay in place but not so tight that it digs in. This is the most important step — wrapping too loosely gives you a bigger size than you actually need.

3. Mark where the paper meets using a pen or pencil. Make a small dot or line at the overlap point.

4. Unroll the paper and measure the marked length using a ruler. This measurement (in mm) is your finger's circumference — use the chart below to find your ring size.

Important: Make sure the paper wraps tightly around your finger. A loose wrap adds unnecessary millimetres and leads to a bigger size than you need. When in doubt, measure twice.

Method 2: Using an existing ring

If you already own a ring that fits perfectly, this method is even simpler.

1. Place the ring flat on a surface and measure the inside diameter — the distance from one inner edge to the other, in a straight line across the centre.
2. Make sure your ruler starts from 0 mm (not from the edge of the ruler), so the measurement is accurate.

3. Note the measurement in mm and match it to the chart below to find your US ring size.

Once you have your measurement, use this chart to find your US ring size. Sizes are approximate and may vary slightly between brands, so when between two sizes, it's generally better to go up.

A few things to keep in mind before you order

Different fingers, different sizes

Your ring finger on your dominant hand is typically slightly larger than the one on your non-dominant hand — sometimes by half a size or more. Always measure the specific finger you plan to wear your ring on, not just "a finger."

Knuckles can be tricky

If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, measure both and pick a size in between. The ring should pass over the knuckle comfortably but not be too loose once it sits at the base.

Temperature matters

Fingers can swell in the heat and shrink in the cold. Avoid measuring first thing in the morning or after exposure to cold water. Mid-afternoon, with warm hands, is the most reliable time to get an accurate measurement.

When in doubt, size up

It's easier to add a small ring spacer to make a ring slightly smaller than it is to deal with one that's too tight. If you're between two sizes, go with the larger one.
